Uber or a Car Service from BNA? How to Choose

Rideshare is usually cheaper for one or two people on a quiet weekday. A pre-booked car service wins on early flights, event weekends, groups, and any trip where being late is expensive. Here is how to decide.

We run a chauffeur company, so you might expect this article to say "always book a car service". It does not. For plenty of trips from Nashville International Airport a rideshare is the sensible choice. The useful question is which trips those are, and which ones are not.

When rideshare is the better choice

One or two travellers, carry-on bags, a weekday arrival in the middle of the day, and a destination close to the airport such as downtown, Donelson or the Gulch. On that kind of trip a standard rideshare is typically the cheapest option, the wait is short, and nothing much depends on arriving at an exact minute. If that describes your trip, take the rideshare.

Where the numbers change

Rideshare prices are set by demand at the moment you request the ride, and Nashville has a lot of moments with very high demand: Friday and Saturday nights, Titans home games, CMA Fest in June, New Year's Eve, and any weekend when several conventions overlap. The same ride can cost several times its weekday price, and you only learn the number when you are standing on the curb. Distance matters as well. For a longer run such as BNA to Murfreesboro, Uber's own route estimate at the time of writing was $48 to $68 for a standard car before any surge, and larger vehicles cost more. A chauffeured transfer is quoted as one flat price when you book, days or weeks earlier, and it does not move.

Early flights

This is the case where we hear the most stories. At 4:30 in the morning in Murfreesboro, Smyrna, Mt. Juliet or Hendersonville there are few rideshare drivers on the road, and the ones who are can decline a trip after accepting it. A scheduled chauffeur is assigned to your booking the day before, confirms by text the evening before, and is outside before the pickup time. If a missed flight would cost you a meeting or a holiday, that certainty is what you are paying for.

Groups and luggage

Five or six people with checked bags do not fit in one standard rideshare, so the real comparison is two or three separate cars against one Suburban, Escalade or Navigator that seats six, or a 14 passenger Sprinter for a bigger group. Once you add the cars together the gap narrows or disappears, and everyone arrives at the same time.

Arrivals

With a car service your flight is tracked from takeoff, so a delay moves the pickup automatically. You can ask for meet-and-greet, where the chauffeur waits at baggage claim with a name sign and helps with the bags. For clients, older relatives and first-time visitors that changes the first half hour of the trip.

What a chauffeured ride costs

First Class Limo publishes its hourly rates: $95 per hour for the Chevrolet Suburban and Ford Expedition, $125 per hour for the Cadillac Escalade, GMC Denali, Lincoln Navigator and BMW 7 Series, and $175 to $195 per hour for Sprinter vans. Airport transfers are quoted as a flat price for your exact address and vehicle. Call dispatch or send the quote form and you will have the number in minutes, then compare it honestly with the rideshare estimate for the same time and day.

A simple rule

If the trip is short, the group is small, the time is ordinary and nothing depends on punctuality, use a rideshare. If the flight is early, the group is large, the weekend is busy, or someone important is arriving, book the car.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is Uber cheaper than a car service from Nashville airport?

Usually yes for one or two people on a quiet weekday to a nearby destination. For groups, long distances such as Murfreesboro or Franklin, early mornings, and event weekends with surge pricing, a flat-rate car service is often comparable and sometimes cheaper.

Does a car service charge more when demand is high?

No. With First Class Limo the transfer price is fixed when you book and does not change with demand, traffic or a delayed flight.

Can I get a rideshare from Murfreesboro to BNA at 4 am?

Sometimes, but availability is thin at that hour and drivers can cancel. For early flights a scheduled chauffeur assigned the day before is the reliable option.
